Looking for a Jamboard replacement?

Google shut Jamboard down on December 31, 2024, and Microsoft retired its standalone Whiteboard apps on October 16, 2026. If what you used them for was sticky notes that a group adds to and sorts, Cardsmith does that in the browser, with more structure than a blank whiteboard.

What happened to Jamboard and Whiteboard

Google announced in September 2023 that it would wind down Jamboard. From October 1, 2024 Jams could no longer be created or edited, and on December 31, 2024 the app closed and Jam files were deleted. Google pointed users to FigJam, Lucidspark and Miro (Google's announcement).

Microsoft retired the standalone Whiteboard apps for Windows, iOS and Android on October 16, 2026. Whiteboard in Microsoft Teams and on the web continues for work and school accounts (Microsoft's notice).

What Cardsmith keeps from sticky notes

  • Cards you type on, in colors, that anyone on the board can drag around.
  • A freeform view where cards go anywhere, with connectors to link related ideas.
  • A grid view that sorts the same kind of cards into rows and columns when it's time to turn ideas into a plan.
  • Live collaboration: everyone on the board sees changes as they're made.
  • Nothing to install: it runs in the browser, and you can sign up with Google or an email address.

When a whiteboard is too loose

An online whiteboard is good for a one-off brainstorm. For work a team returns to every week, such as a training plan, a retro or a roadmap, a blank canvas tends to drift. Cardsmith's grid boards keep the same rows and columns from one meeting to the next, and each card can carry a checklist, links and notes. Templates for those boards are below.

What Cardsmith doesn't do

There's no pen, handwriting or drawing, and no shapes. If drawing was the main thing you used Jamboard for, one of the whiteboards Google suggested will fit better.

Questions

Can I import my old Jams?

No. Google deleted Jamboard files when the service closed, and Cardsmith can't read Jam files. If you have notes in a spreadsheet, Cardsmith can import them from a CSV file.

What does it cost?

Every account starts with a 30-day trial of all Professional features, and no credit card is needed. After that, Professional is $9 a month billed yearly ($12 billed monthly), and Team plans are $9 per person per month billed yearly. If you don't subscribe, your boards stay viewable but can't be edited. Details are on the pricing page.
